Actually Jan had an appointment in McAllen for Friday morning, so we thought the timing was perfect. However, due to the impending storm, the doctors office called Thursday afternoon, wanting to re-schedule. Well, dang-it, excuse my french. I really did not want to leave the island, but then again, I wanted to make sure the motorhome was ready for whatever was going to hit us.
Listening to the weather, we found out that Harvey was heading more toward Corpus Christie, than South Padre island. This was a relief to us, but we feel really sorry for the northern part of the Texas coast that is about to get hit by a Category 3 hurricane.
Friday morning, August 25. After listening to the news mostly all night, we decided to head back to the island. The Queen Isabella Causeway, linking the island to the mainland, will close if the winds get above 45 MPH. So we headed out around 8am, hoping to beat the winds. Luckily, we were able to fill up with gas, and get across the causeway minutes before they closed it.
On the island, it felt like a ghost town. Rain came down consistently, but it was rather light. Roads were open, stores closed. After getting back to the condo, we unloaded, and then proceeded to mop up water within the condo. We still have a leak from the work that had been done earlier this year replacing all windows and patio doors with hurricane rated doors and windows. Apparently, they missed some caulking...........
